Leopard Slug Colony

Day#293-October 20th/2011-I started this colony in the spring time and since then have around 100+ slugs and twice if not more eggs in the colony. The bottom of the enclosure is covered with eggs. In the spring time i started with 2 adults. So the colony grew slowly but now it grows rapidly almost every day the slugs lay 50+ eggs. Since i am keeping them indoors the eggs should hatch in 2 weeks. of course the ones that were orignally laid should hatch out in one week. In around 1 month my population should be in the thousands.

Every 1000 slugs eat 1 pound of food a day. So if you have 10 000 slugs that's 10 pounds of food a day! So once it starts rolling it will be more of a challenge to keep them well fed. They make quite a lot of "Slug Compost" Hmm maybe i should make a Slug Composting Bin? I'll think about it during winter. So in the spring time i'd be looking out for a post about Slug Composting!

I'll keep you updated on how this colony is going and when it will be time for a Challenge...

The Leopard Slug

The leopard slug is a big slug growing up to 18 cm in length[thats 4 inches!] and boy do they eat. The leopard slug has two eye stalks and two sensory organs that are used to smell and taste diffrent types of food that they are on.

This is the type of slug I keep. I have only 1 real colony of them and as such only need to feed one. Thank goodness as the ammount i keep eat like pigs. I placed in a strawberry before night time and in the morning nothing remained! They will be a real test of my invert keeping as they eat so much. I am keeping them awake during the winter so i'll need to feed them everyday and water them everyday. No slacking off either as then i have to deal with cannobolizm[sp].

Just thought i'd write a little about this slug.

Slugs!

Since i have 40+ slugs i thought i'd post something about eggs. They will lay around 4000+ eggs and that will be 4000 slugs which will make 40 000 eggs and of course when that happens my ofc will really be rolling slugs will be eating since they eat their own weight in food each day 40 000 slugs will eat 4-6 pounds or more of vegtable matter in one day thats 28 pounds a week! Then no more P.I.C it'll be Pounds In Counting!

Slugs Rule

Since i like slugs and composting so much i thought i'd make a blog about slug composting! So far i have 46 slugs and man do they eat! So far they've eaten 20+ Pieces In Counting in my recent Overfeeding Challenge!

Slugs have been laying and reproducing like crazy. My species is Limax maximus [The Common Leopard slug].
